Kemhut: Rules of Procedure of Water For Geothermal Development
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Forestry (Kemhut) proposed utilization of waterworks regulations into a legal umbrella for the utilization of geothermal energy (geothermal).
"Kemhut proposed umbrella law for the use of geothermal potential of reaching 25 710 Mega Watt (MW) or the equivalent of 19 billion barrels of crude oil through spatial regulation of water, because water can be power driven turbines to generate geothermal power," said Secretary General Kemhut, Daryanto, here on Thursday.
Review rules of procedure of the water more easily done than if the government revises the law on nature conservation as it will take a long time and a long process, he said. "The most appropriate is to use the regulations on the utilization of these water services."
For that, he said, the government should accommodate the interests of entrepreneurs who want to invest in the sector, this geothermal. "Many investors are prepared to invest its efforts on geothermal energy sector, the government should immediately seek a way out."
The installed capacity of geothermal new now 4.3 per cent of this energy potential or target of 1189 MW of geothermal energy development in 2025 which stipulated only for 9500 MW.
Various projects have been undertaken to achieve these targets, including four projects that have been signed by the State Electricity Company (PLN) and PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy for the World Bank-funded development projects in Central Java, North Sumatra and West Lampung.
Total investment of this project amounted to 8.6 billion U.S. dollars and will produce approximately 2885 MW of electricity that can cover the lack of current national electricity supply by 4900 MW.
Earlier, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia was still occupying the third position of geothermal energy user, after the United States amounted to 4,000 MW and 2,000 MW Philippines.
According to Hadi, the government plans to accelerate geothermal development in the country. For that, he said, the government needs the help of various parties, such as the private sector, international financial institutions and donor countries.
