Liputan6.com, Seoul: South Korea has made a giant Christmas tree made of steel and decorative lighting in the area near the border with North Korea for the first time in seven years, North Korea called the move as a provocative act.
As reported by NHK site, Christmas tree lighting ceremony was held on Tuesday (21/12) night and with tight security. The event was attended by around 400 people, including local government officials. Christian groups in South Korea is adorned steel tower 30 meters high with decorative lights in an observatory, about three miles south of the demilitarized zone.
Ignition of Christmas trees this becomes an annual event ever since the 1950s. It was discontinued in 2004 based on inter-Korean agreement to end the propaganda activities in the border area. South Korea's military decision to continue this annual ritual artillery attack followed incidents last month on the island of Yeonpyeong by North Korean and South Korean warship sank in March last.
A spokesman for the newspaper's official Korean Workers Party, the main party in North Korea, Rodong Sinmun, said this is part of psychological warfare and South Korea is the irrational provocative actions that could trigger a new armed conflict. (NHK / Yus)
