JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Achievement of ornamental fish exports this year increasingly kinclong / good prospects only. Data Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (CTF) shows, ornamental fish exports in 2010 increased significantly. In terms of volume, in January-September 2010, the level of ornamental fish exports reached 1124 tons, up 109.24 percent from the same period in 2009 which recorded only 537 million tons. In terms of value, the value of ornamental fish exports this year of 7.1 million U.S. dollars, up 37.39 percent from the same period last year reached 5.2 million U.S. dollars.
Increased export of ornamental fish which makes CTF optimistic kinclong will meet the export target of earlier this year pegged at a rate of 11 million U.S. dollars. "In fact, we believe the ornamental fish exports this year will exceed the target," said Maman Herman, Director of Product Development of Non Consumption of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (CTF), to KONTAN, Wednesday (11/22/2010).
Maman explained, so far this year, the CTF is continue to try to minimize the practice of illegal exports of ornamental fish. During this time, ornamental fish from Indonesia are smuggled into Singapore and Malaysia through several areas such as Sumatra and Kalimantan. Arowana Fish for example, during the time are smuggled into Malaysia through Borneo. Even though with Betta fish from Papua who are often smuggled into Singapore and other countries through several regions.
Head of Sub Directorate of Ornamental Fish Culture CTF Setiawan added, the increase in exports of ornamental fish this year is very reasonable considering since last year the CTF to be serious in taking care of these ornamental fish. According to him, since last year, the CTF has established a Sub-directorate of special cultivation of ornamental fish that take care of ornamental fish production. This new institution managed to boost production centers such as ornamental fish in Papua, Sukabumi and Lampung. As a result, production of ornamental fish this year reached 1.6 billion birds rise from last year that only 1.3 billion birds.
In addition, the CTF also create programs excel in two main production centers of Sukabumi, West Java and Bath Wind, South Kalimantan. During this time, ornamental fish from Indonesia are often considered less qualified by consumers outside. This image is very reasonable considering holding of ornamental fish in some areas many of which are aged over 13 years. As a result, the genetic quality and color of ornamental fish in Indonesia is very low.
The establishment of centers of excellence parent is an attempt to improve the quality CTF Indonesian ornamental fish. The two centers are expected to produce superior parent who then will spread to all ornamental fish production centers throughout Indonesia. "We hope that next year the quality of our ornamental fish will rise," said Setiawan.
Meanwhile, Iwan Putra Hendra, Secretary General of Indonesia Tropical Fish Exporters (Inafish), states in fact he predicts ornamental fish exports will decline slightly this year compared to last year. According to him, moments like the 2010 World Cup was allegedly eroded the demand for ornamental fish in several European countries. "They prefer to watch the ball rather than buying ornamental fish," said Hendra.
Seeing kinclongnya ornamental fish exports this year, CTF poised to continue to boost production and marketing of ornamental fish from Indonesia. According to Setiawan, ornamental fish from next year will get their own portion of the budget that will be used to boost production of quality seeds and quantity of production.
From the marketing side, the CTF continues to perform imaging (branding) of ornamental fish from Indonesia through a series of exhibitions both at home and abroad. This strategy mutlat made considering this for a lot of ornamental fish in Indonesia are claimed by Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. "We will continue to try to restore the lost image of it," said Maman. (Veri Nurhansyah Tragistina / KONTAN )
