KOMPAS.com - Voyager 1 satellite owned by the United States Space Agency NASA has reached the edge of the solar system. Currently, Voyager 1 is at a distance of 17.4 billion kilometers from the sun.
Voyager 1 is expected to leave the solar system about 4 years. Furthermore, the plane will enter the interstellar region, a region between solar system and other stars.
Up on the edge of the solar system, Voyager 1 discover new things related to the solar wind, charged particles emitted from the sun in all directions. The findings were presented by scientists in a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, California, USA on Monday (13/12/10) last.
Voyager 1 found that solar wind no longer leads to the outside but to the side. Supposedly the scientists, it is concerned with the pressure of the wind in interstellar space. Meanwhile, Voyager 1 also show that the solar wind speed was also changed to near zero from a previously radiated with supersonic speed.
"When I realized the velocity is almost zero, I was very amazed," said Rob Decker, a senior scientist from Johns Hopkins University.
Sun solar wind moving at supersonic speed to form a bubble in the solar system called the heliosphere. Well, at a distance of 14 billion miles out, the solar wind speed decreased drastically, forming a layer of turbulent solar particle called the heliosheath.
In the heliosheath that Voyager 1 has now arrived. Precisely in a region where the solar wind speed to the outside the sun is almost close to zero.
Becker said, "This is the Voyager, a satellite that has worked for 33 years but still show us something really new."
Voyager 1 was launched in 1977. This satellite has entered the heliosheath in 2004 and started providing data on the edge of the solar system. Analysis of the scientists showed, since August 2007 solar wind speed continues to decrease by 72 000 kilometers per hour each year.
Scientists will know that Voyager 1 has entered the territory when there is a decrease interstellar particle density of particles increased heat and cold. Its twin Voyager 2 satellites moving in different directions.
