KOMPAS.com - As many as 1250 species of bamboo spread throughout the world. Of these, 159 of them are in Indonesia and 88 are endemic bamboo species archipelago (INDONESIA).
Jatmika, leader of the Bamboo Foundation of Indonesia, said, "37 species of bamboo in West Java, now very rare. It's hard to find. Though once widespread."
He told Thursday (13/1/11) after the signing of a memorandum of understanding bamboo conservation program by the Foundation KEHATI and Alstom Indonesia, supported by Bamboo Foundation of Indonesia.
"One of them is bamboo-Eul Eul. Sundanese people believe, this bamboo can cure 41 kinds of diseases. Materials for the medicine be absorbed through the nerves and bone marrow," said Jatmika.
Other types of bamboo that have been classified as rare is spotted bamboo. Diameter of bamboo is more or less 9 cm. Uniquely, this bamboo has a golden yellow color and leopard (spots) black.
"Tutulnya / Spots of leopard that was made of bamboo that have aesthetic value. So it can be used as raw material for furniture. Branches can only be used actually," said Jatmika.
Meanwhile, bamboo Galuh, betung wulung, bamboo Tamiang, and Haur gereng are other types that are rare. Two types have the last say Jatmika drug efficacy.
Jatmika said the cause of scarcity is the conversion of land into residential areas. In addition, also the notion that bamboo is a wild plant that is free of exploitation.
