JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The government finally set the 59 species tariff-free products imported staple food and food-related materials, on Friday (01/21/2011) tomorrow, despite opposition by the representatives of the peasantry.
The government argues, import duty exemption was an effort to maintain stability and national food security. "Tomorrow, it's got to get out of his Finance Minister. There are 59 tariff," said Coordinating Minister Hatta Rajasa after a coordination meeting at the office of Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Jakarta, Thursday (20/01/2011) night.
According to him, 59 kinds of food products, among others, rice, wheat, soybeans, animal feed raw food, and fertilizer.
"Food pressure is high enough, if we provide import duties, would be influential to the community and the price rises. So, we have to stabilize the price," said Hatta.
However, the type of product, Hatta said, sugar is not included because the Ministry of Trade is still able to maintain a stable price of sugar.
At the same time, the government also made sure to delay for one year the implementation of Regulation of the Minister of Finance (PMK) No. 241 Year 2010 on Determination of Classification System for Goods and Imposition of Tariffs and import duty on imported goods.
According to Hatta, the postponement of the implementation FMD because the government wants to keep inflation, especially food pressure is now very high. "Current conditions are no better than 2009 from the food, we decided to postpone again. A year we delay," he said.
The government made several steps to secure and stabilize the stock price of staple foods in the country which was later disrupted due to extreme climate change has reduced food production.
Besides planning to release the import duty staple food and food-related materials such as animal feed, the government will also publish the Presidential Regulation to anticipate the impact of climate change on food production.
Presidential Instruction on rice will also be published so that Perum Logistics Agency (Bulog) can be more flexible to buy rice and grain from farmers to maintain the national rice stock.
