JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia's mobile market is getting excited. According to data released by International Data Corporation (IDC), during January-September was totally new to the Indonesian mobile phone shipments reached 25.5 million units. This number grew 45.7 percent compared with same period of delivery of new phones 2009 that as many as 17.5 million units.
Rizki Muhammad Ridwan, Senior Market Analyst Indonesia says IDC, the smartphone is the driving force for improving the mobile market. Smartphone more and more people hunted for its ability to connect to the Internet and business support standard features such as push email and instant messaging.
"Social networking sites and instant messaging to drive users of the Internet service either via PC or mobile phone," said Rizki told Cash, Monday (25/10/2010).
During January-September 2010, smartphones accounted for 12 percent or about 3.06 million units. This number grew 80 per cent of the total smartphone same period last year.
Chris Lewis, Vice President of Telecommunications and Networking Group looked at IDC, mobile data is a premium service that requires a big investment for operators. Therefore, telecommunication vendors need to invest wisely in arresting this trend.
"For services that are not competencies, telecom operators can hold partners such as developers, handset vendors and content providers to provide comprehensive services for customers," explained Chris. That's why the operator is currently focusing on efficiency in order to compete.
Until the end of the year, IDC predicts the total new mobile phone shipments will reach 36 million, or grew 29 percent. Of this amount, the smartphone will reach 12 percent. According Rizki this is caused by an increasingly sloping price smartphone. The existence of competition between Research In Motion (BlackBerry), Apple Mac (iPhone), Microsoft, and Google (Android) makes each player is trying to offer rich mobile phone functionality with competitive price.
Looking ahead, IDC forecast the smartphone market will be flooded with innovative mobile phone that can be used for mobile banking and payment tools. (KONTAN / Gloria Haraito)
