CALIFORNIA - Cisco Security researchers positively identify malicious spam campaigns targeting users of social networking site LinkedIn business contacts with the demand for counterfeit.
Not surprisingly, email contact message contains a malicious link if the recipient clicked, will automatically install malicious software.
According to Cisco, the malware associated with the campaign LinkedIn is a variant of the family that operates Zeus data theft by embedding itself in the user's web browser. Malware will then be well positioned to carry out dangerous tasks, including stealing the user's online banking credentials.
"The target users of social networks for the spread of financial malware is a smart move for criminals. These attacks are far more likely to succeed than phishing attacks on banks," said security expert and CEO Mickey Trusteer Boodaei, as quoted GlobalSecurityMag on Thursday (30/09/2010 .)
"After Zeus is installed on a user's computer, then the criminals not only get access to login information, but also for real time transactions and other sensitive information on victim's computer," he added.
Boodaei also warned that Zeus, the malware that is currently being modified by cybercriminals to attack smartphone users.
"The spread of Zeus into a mobile platform marks the beginning of a new era of mobile malware. The danger in this approach is that the same malware that controls the two communication channels two, PCs and mobile devices." he said.
