Farmers prepare organic fertilizer from cow dung.
Fajar Marta
KOMPAS.com - For years, Ngatijan (56) felt uncomfortable with the pile of cow dung that is not used in the village in the hamlet Margaraya, Lurung Village, Natar Subdistrict, South Lampung, Lampung Province.
Pile of cow dung there were increasingly stacked remember almost every citizen in the village have a cow to plow the land.
In 2004, men born in Yogyakarta Special Region is also trying to take advantage of that scattered cow dung in the village to make organic fertilizer.
Initially, efforts Ngatijan ups and downs. Understandably, it is not easy to get the organic fertilizer market in the midst of continued popularity of chemical fertilizers and manure strong mafia game.
At first he could only produce tens of tons per month. However, with perseverance and hard work, now Ngatijan can produce organic fertilizer to 500 tons per month.
Workforce that was originally only 5 people are now grown to 20 people. With the price of organic fertilizer at Rp 500 per kilogram, Ngatijan turnover can reach USD 250 million per month.
Foresight and hard work to produce organic fertilizer not only benefits himself. About 500 farmers living in the village and surrounding villages are now also able to reap additional revenue from cow dung.
Ngatijan not take the cow dung for free, but the value it with money. Cow dung that were previously considered to be the less useful it could be money in the hands Ngatijan.
Though not large, the additional income is adequate to raise capital and improve the welfare of farming community village.
Ngatijan organic fertilizer business soared when the government issued Government Fertilizer Assistance program (CPP) for poor farmers in 2009. Major fertilizer manufacturers and distributors of the requested channel BPP, such as PT Pertani and PT Sang Hyang Seri, also working with manufacturers of organic fertilizers and small-medium scale.
The husband of this Sudarti also capture these opportunities to participate and become a supplier of organic fertilizer from cow dung.
Organic fertilizer production process begins by gathering raw materials in the form of cow dung from the population. To increase the motivation and enthusiasm of farmers to collect and dry cow dung, Ngatijan usually pay in advance or mengijon cow dung.
Price as dried cow dung for a week around Rp 40 per kilogram. So, with two cows, a family farmer can earn wages usually around Rp 50,000 per month.
Furthermore, dried cow dung that has been transported from people's homes to the place of production, which is located in rice fields, not far from home Ngatijan.
The process of organic fertilizer
To make organic fertilizer, cow dung is mixed with compositions of other materials: cow manure by 80-83 percent, 5 percent sawdust, hyper material microorganism 0.25 percent, 10 percent rice husk ash, and lime 2 percent.
This mixture was then left for a week while you are turned upside down to maintain oxygen levels. After one week, usually has matured organic fertilizer with manure color blackish brown crumb texture and odorless.
The next step, fertilizer sifted or filtered to obtain a uniform shape and separates from unexpected materials, like stones, pieces of wood, or rope, so that the organic fertilizer produced really good quality.
Organic fertilizers then fed into a packaging bag 50 pounds that have been provided and labeled by the distributor as fertilizer aid from the government.
Organic fertilizers that have been packaged are then taken by the distributor of fertilizer to be distributed free to farmers as a substitute for chemical fertilizer in Lampung and the surrounding region.
Men who only completed elementary school, said his business success is inseparable from Swamitra assistance, microfinance institutions that formed the cooperative with funding and management of Bukopin.
By borrowing funds from Swamitra, Ngatijan can buy raw materials from farmers cow manure in large quantities and build a production site and buy the grinding machine. With the help Swamitra Similarly, Ngatijan not until ensnared middlemen who usually charged exorbitant interest rates.
Looking ahead, the father of six children is planned to increase its production capacity by adding a grinding machine and expand the production area and increase employment. The hope, he can produce about 1,000 to 2,000 tons per month in order to meet demand during this can not be fulfilled.
Understandably, Ngatijan also want to sell more organic fertilizer to the commercial market. According to him, organic fertilizer which is sold by commercial price could be higher than the government aid is sold as fertilizer.
If production increases, Ngatijan course also can hold more farmers in surrounding villages to buy cattle dung so that more farmers' welfare is raised.
