KIARA Criticism Results Summit Agreement on Climate Change
Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Coalition for Justice Fisheries (KIARA) criticized the agreement on Climate Change Summit in Cancun, Mexico, for not emphasizing safety of the islands most affected by climate change.
"Climate of the 16th Summit has not put safety of the islands as a priority," said Secretary-General KIARA, M Riza Damanik, told AFP on Monday.
That, said Riza, can be seen in the description of nine-point agreement Cancun which is not binding and assessed KIARA kesewang full-handedness.
According to him, it's worth to be considered in the event that commemorated the celebration of Indonesian Archipelago Day annually on 13 December.
"Archipelago Day every December 13 should be optimized by the state to protect and ensure the safety of every citizen in the Indonesian archipelago from the threat of climate catastrophe," he said.
As known, the celebration of Day of the archipelago was made to commemorate the Declaration Djuanda made in 1957.
Djuanda Declaration is a declaration stating to the world that Indonesia is the sea, including sea around, between and within the Indonesian archipelago into a single unit NKRI.
Before the declaration Djuanda, the territory of the Republic of Indonesia refers to the Dutch East Indies Ordinance 1939, which says that the islands in the archipelago are separated sea around it and every island has only around the sea as far as 3 miles from the coastline.
Thus, before the Declaration Djuanda, free of foreign ships sailing in waters separating the islands.
Riza also urge that the government did not pursue policies which only implies the existence of economic expansion from land to sea.
Earlier, summit (COP) on Climate Change 16th in Cancun, Mexico, December 11, eventually producing Cancun Agreement approved by all participating countries except Bolivia.
Cancun Agreement adopted a package of balanced decision for all countries that regulate more firmly toward a future of low emission and support the further action of tackling climate change than developed countries.
The contents of the agreement will also include emission reduction targets on industrialized countries under the multilateral process and the country developed a plan for low-carbon development, and evaluation strategies, including market mechanisms and reporting inventory periodically.
