JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Within one to two weeks ahead of DKI Jakarta will be showered with premium-quality rice imported from Thailand as much as 100,000 tons. The entry of rice is expected to reduce rice price increases that occurred in the last few days and prevent the increase in the months ahead.
"Next week, Thailand with the level of broken rice (grain split) 5 percent (or classified as premium quality rice) will go to Jakarta," said Vice Minister of Agriculture Bayu Krinamurthi in Jakarta, Wednesday (22/12/2010).
This is one part of the deal that has been taken in the Food Security Coordination meeting led by Coordinating Minister Hatta Rajasa held Wednesday morning. Also present at the meeting, among others, Minister of Trade Mari Elka Pangestu.
According to Bayu, rice will be used for special market operations in Jakarta. In this way, the increase in rice prices that occurred during the past few days is going to be muted as soon as possible.
"Besides being used for market operations in Jakarta, rice can also be used to market in areas that experienced price increases of rice up to five percent. Especially in the western Indonesian regions, such as Sumatra and Kalimantan. In this way, we can reduce prices, "he said.
Within one to three weeks, the price of rice in Jakarta already begun to decline USD 200-USD 300 per kilogram. On that basis, the government ordered Bulog to provide premium rice to rice traders who do need and shortage of supply.
"Bulog should lower the price, around USD 200-USD 300 lower than similar prices in the market. In this way, the price of ransom (by traders when to buy into Bulog), we estimate there will be in the range of USD 6250-USD 6300 per kilogram," said Bayu.
