The tsunami flattened all the upright in most Pulai Pagai, West Sumatra, except for a small mosque in this seaside region.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A unique phenomenon occurs is found by the Indonesian-German research team when down the Mentawai region to conduct the study after the tsunami. One was a church building that was not destroyed was hit by a wave.
"There's a church building is not destroyed, but only shifted," said Widjo chat, lead researcher on the project here on Tuesday (11/30/2010). The lower part of the church which is the foundation slightly raised but remain in the same position, but the walls and roof made of timber shifted as far as 1.5 meters.
Widjo revealed, the church building is located at a distance of 100 to 200 meters from the beach. Meanwhile, the height of the building where the church stands is 2 to 3.5 meters above sea level.
Asked whether the building could become a model example of the tsunami-resistant buildings, Widjo reveals, "I think this happens because the building is located some distance from shore. If it is located near the beach, this building would be destroyed," he said.
Previously, also reported no buildings are not destroyed mosque was hit by the tsunami. The building is still standing despite the wave swept around him.
Furthermore, if indeed there are buildings that can be said to withstand tsunamis, he says still needs further study on this. But, if there is earthquake-resistant buildings, what is there to say yes building tsunami-resistant?
